Due to unavoidable circumstances The Strand Restaurant and Guesthouse will not be opening for the Summer of 2022. Apologies for the inconvenience. Thank you Johnny and Caroline.

Johnny Redmond

The Strand is a traditional family-run business and has been since the mid to late 1800’s and we have always maintained an excellent reputation for both our hospitality and cuisine. My name is Johnny Redmond and I am the fourth generation of the McMahon/Gibson family to carry on the tradition in the catering and accommodation business here. I am a chef by trade.

The Strand started as a boarding house during the mid to late 1800’s and was run by my Grandmothers Aunt and her husband. My Grandmother came to work here from a family of 14 when she was 14 years old and carried on here until she inherited the premises in the 1940’s, when she died she left it to her Son and I in turn purchased it in 1990.

The interior of The Strand has been kept in the same old style as ever and we currently have six 3 star en-suit individually designed bed rooms which over look the Atlantic Ocean. We have plans to add extra 6-8 rooms in the next few years thus changing our status back to its original as a Hotel.

On site we have two Ocean facing restaurants which sit about 90 people between them and we specialize in locally caught seafood and the best sourced Prime Irish Beef as well as lots more including our famous homemade desserts, brown breads and extensive wine list. Just This year we at The Strand have been recommended as a place to visit by “Georgina Campbell’s Ireland Guides” and she in turn has just this week recommended us to BIM to be a part of the “Sea Food Circle” of places to eat fresh fish in Ireland.

We are located over looking one mile of crescent shaped beach which is renowned for its safe bathing and crystal clean waters. Just a short walk from the Strand one will find some of the most scenic views and cliff formations, ocean waves, flora and fauna that you would be lightly to see any where else in the World. Kilkee is world renowned for Scuba Diving, Fishing, Golf, Cliff Walks etc.

We are also situated on the “Loop Head” peninsula about 14miles north of the headland itself which is steeped in history and folklore and is where the famous Shannon River meets the wild Atlantic Ocean. On a lot of occasions, I have advised some of my guests to take time out from the usual tourist tracks and go and visit the “Cliffs at Loop Head” and it never ceases to amaze me that they always come back and ask “why no body had told them about these cliffs”.

Once described to me as a “Sleeping Giant on The Ocean” Kilkee and The Loop Head Peninsula offer some of the most beautiful scenic views, walks, untouched traditional Irish landscapes and the cleanest air that you are lightly to experience anywhere in Europe and it is my hope that one day it will be held in the same high esteem as “The Cliffs of Moher”
